A
BRIEF HISTORY OF WESLEY UNITED CHURCH
During the 1850's three churches of the Methodist persuasion worshipped in Galt. The Primitive Methodists met on Ainslie Street and the Wesleyan Methodists on Thorne Street. The New Connection Methodists who had moved from their beginnings in 1840 on south Water Street were located on Dickson Street. In 1872 the Wesleyans moved into the original Knox Church where the market building now stands. With it they acquired all the adjacent land, now the Market Square. All branches of Methodism joined to form the Methodist Church of Canada in 1875. By 1880, the combined congregations had built the main structure of our present church known as Ainslie Street Methodist Church. The surrounding land was sold to the city. By 1885 attendance had increased so much that it was necessary to build the galleries. In 1925, with the formation of the United Church of Canada, the church became Wesley United Church. On January 9, 1938 a new addition was dedicated, the chapel and parlour with a stage for Ainslie Hall and a furnace room below. The Christian Education Building provided classrooms, offices and the Ballentine Hall, which was completed on April 16, 1961. The buildings testify to the faith and fellowship of many persons from 1840 to the present day. |
