I hope that you are enjoying these wonderful fall days.  It is hard to believe that it is October and that Thanksgiving is only a few days away.

Please don’t forget a major event on our fall agenda, the Phantom of the Opera dinner and concert on October 28.  Tickets are going fast.  Cost for the dinner and the concert is $35, and $15 for the concert alone.  The dinner is at 6:00 p.m. with the concert at 7:30 p.m.  Joan Montague is coordinating the ticket sales for the dinner, so please speak to her or call the office to book a table.  Shirley Beechey has concert tickets, so please speak to her if you would like one or call the church office.  World renowned organist Ian Sadler will be accompanying the black and white 1925 silent movie of the ‘Phantom of the Opera’.  This will be a one-of-a-kind experience, so don’t miss out.  And it will definitely put you in the mood for Hallowe’en!

If you are a knitter and would like to contribute to our Christmas knitting trees, we are looking for mittens, hats, scarves and headbands and would like to have them in early December to distribute to adults and children who use the services of the Cambridge Self-Help Food Bank and other social agencies.  These gifts are always welcome and are doubly special when they are hand-made.  They can be dropped off at the church at any time.

I want to thank the nine people who stayed after church on September 25 to discuss what God means to us today.  This discussion arose out of the Rev. Gretta Vosper issue that is currently before the United Church.  It was a rich discussion and I believe that we all came away with a better and closer understanding of each other and what our faith means to us.  We will have more of these discussions as issues arise throughout the year.

Our first seniors’ luncheon of the year will be on Thursday October 20 at noon in Ainslie Hall.  Cost remains at $10 per person.  The menu will be chicken stir fry, rice, salad, rolls, cake and ice cream and beverages.  We will also have individual beef meat pies for sale.  The program has not been finalized as yet, but please plan to attend and bring a friend.  These lunches have been a huge success and are lots of fun.

Thanksgiving always causes me to reflect on all that I am grateful for.  For Christmas last year, I received “The Simple Abundance Journal of Gratitude”.  The idea is to write down five things each day that you are grateful for.  They don’t need to be big things.  In reviewing my entries over the past few months, I am grateful for ‘sunshine on snow, a great cup of coffee, for caring people, for family and friends, for morning bird song, for my church family, for my book club, for lazy afternoons, for fun in the kitchen’ and many, many more.  I am also grateful to live in a country free from war, for clean water at the turn of a tap, for enough food and clothing, for shelter, and for a circle of support.  There are those in our community and in other parts of the world who can only dream of these things.

So at this time of Thanksgiving, write down five things that you are grateful for and consider them, or send a note to five people that you care about to let them know that you are thinking about them.  We are blessed in so many ways.

With gratitude and peace,

Anne Tinker
